Description

Core Purpose / Job Description

 The Senior database administrator oversees all aspects of a set of databases from the initial database architecture through implementation, administration, monitoring, tuning, backup, migration, and support. He/She must assume a technical leadership to insure the appropriate evolution of our databases.

The Senior database administrator is responsible for the following activities:

  • Provide guidance and support to more junior DBAs to insure the quality of database solutions applied
  • Define and document database architecture and design
  • Define, document and enforce development standards and naming conventions for databases
  • Participate to the definition of disk partitioning
  • Evaluate and recommend new database technologies
  • Performs system impact analysis for upcoming changes
  • Estimate the work effort required to deliver Database solutions
  • Approves deliverables produced by other DBAs and external IT suppliers

 

The Senior database administrator also execute general DBA tasks as:

  • Build database objects (schemas, tables, indexes, …)
  • Structure and manage database access permissions
  • Develop database utilities (Unload, Load, Backup, Restore, Reorg, …)
  • Analyze and sustain capacity and performance requirements
  • Analyze, consolidate and tune database for optimal efficiency
  • Monitor systems and platforms for availability.
  • Oversee backup, clustering, mirroring, replication and failover
  • Restore and recover corrupted databases
  • Install and test upgrades and patches
  • Implement security and encryption

Key Functions:


Provide leadership on database solution evolution

  • Provide guidance to more junior DBAs to insure the quality of the database solution applied
  • Define and document database architecture and design
  • Define, document and enforce development standards and naming conventions for databases
  • Participate to the definition of disk partitioning
  • Evaluate and recommend new database technologies

 

Perform database administration tasks

  • Monitoring of DB systems
  • Create and maintain database objects (Table, index, views)
  • Develop scripts and utilities
  • Support Production and development activities
  • Performance optimization

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to communicate and document relevant information regarding databases
  • Capability to work efficiently within a team with people having various roles and expertises (i.e. development manager, technical analyst, data architect, technical advisor, developer, …)
  • Ability to understand a problem, identify its root and find technical solutions
  • Ability to accomplish their own tasks in an autonomous and organized fashion
  • Openness to change and flexibility to work extended hours when required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science
  • Must be bilingual (French and English)
  • Work experience as a database administrator on various and large database implementations
  • Deep understanding of database architecture and concepts
  • Understanding of multidimensional data modeling concepts
  • Understanding of entity relation data modeling concepts
