The database administrator is responsible for maintaining the database infrastructure for internal and external clients. The effective management of these systems is a critical component of core business. Work is performed in compliance with Quality System Management procedures.


The Incumbent is expected to behave ethically and follow the established code of business conduct, policies and internal control procedures, laws and regulations governing Toronto Hydro.


  • Administering, creating, maintaining and monitoring internal databases
  • Documenting server access for all systems, and establishing backup and restore procedures
  • Performing capacity planning, and managing system and database configuration changes
  • Conducting performance tuning
  • Managing the system security and ensuring disaster recovery plans are in place
  • Providing 24x7 software and hardware support to employees and clients; logging and documenting support calls within the guidelines of established procedures and policies
  • Enforcing security and access control for any product
  • Planning, performing and documenting installation qualifications
  • Installing, maintaining and monitoring software and hardware, while troubleshooting technical problems as they arise
  • Performing code and design review and assisting in operational and performance qualification
  • Designing and documenting hardware architectures and technical specifications
  • Assembling, documenting and installing product releases
  • Assisting on product development, based on software, hardware and implementation requirements
  • Creating and maintaining Technical Support work instructions and procedures
  • Researching new technologies
  • Preparing requests for proposals and information
  • Facilitating knowledge transfer between products and clients
  • Participating in the audit process as required
  • Assisting with the submission of any documentation to a regulatory authority
  • Attending meetings as required


  • Bachelor's degree in Computer systems or related discipline.
  • A minimum of six (6) years relevant work experience in DBA and eight (8) years experience in IT with responsibilities throughout project life cycle.
  • Familiarity with AIX (or other Unix OS), Local Area and Wide Area network topology and Storage Area networks
  • Ability to work with customers, technical, and management staff as well as other company staff
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and writing
  • Ability to present complex technical information to a wide range of audiences, from other technical staff to senior management
  • Must be dependable and flexible, able to work independently or as part of a team
  • Good follow-through on task assignments
  • Excellent project management skills

  • Exhibit excellent problem-solving skills
