Role Summary:
The Database Services Team within Data Management Services is looking for a qualified candidate for a Senior MS SQL Server Database Analyst position. Primary responsibilities will include support for a variety of MS SQL Server applications including vendor packages and in-house developed applications across multiple environments: production, development, user test and DR. The candidate will also be responsible for the following:
Main Accountabilities:
  • Interacting with clients and senior management on incident and problem resolution
  • Providing high-level estimates for major client initiatives
  • Assisting in database design for application development efforts
  • Coordinating various DMS initiatives
  • Providing mentoring and guidance to less experienced database administrators
  • Helping to establish and refine department standards and procedures
  • Streamlining existing processes
  • Developing innovative solutions around stability
  • Developing automation and improving efficiency
  • Performing in-depth analysis and suggesting solutions for performance bottlenecks
There is an expectation that support for certain client projects and DMS initiatives will require off-hours and weekend availability. The candidate will also participate in an on-call rotation approximately every five weeks. A company laptop, cell phone and VPN security token will be provided to facilitate remote support. Typical on-call activities include responding to routine monitoring alerts, production batch cycle failures, participation in major incident calls, and pre-arranged off-hours and weekend client support work.
  • Comprehensive understanding of MS SQL Server 2000/2005/2008 tools and technologies including: replication, security, encryption, recoverability, SSIS, analysis services
  • Strong knowledge of relational databases and relational database design
  • Working knowledge of ITIL concepts and best practices
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and adhere to Sun Life policies
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Proven leadership and mentoring qualities
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a broader team to achieve goals

Supplementary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of IBM OPTIM archiving and data masking tools
  • Knowledge and practical experience with Zeke scheduling system
  • Experience with script programming (Windows Power Shell, VBScript, Perl)
  • Knowledge of IBM Tivoli Storage Management environment
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ensure availability and stability of HA production environments
  • Follow established company policies for ITIL processes (Change, Config, Incident, Problem)
  • Help establish and refine department standards, procedures and best practices
  • Review and streamline existing processes
  • Develop innovate solutions around stability, automation and efficiency
  • Coordinate and/or participate in various DMS initiatives
  • Assist clients with database design for application development efforts
  • Comply with Sun Life security standards and follow all SOX and audit requirements
  • Perform in-depth analysis and suggest solutions for performance bottlenecks
  • Provide high-level estimates for major client initiatives
  • Review individual workload and escalate to management if
  • Interact with clients and senior management on incident and problem resolution
  • Provide mentoring, guidance and training to less experienced database administrators
  • Assist DMS management with evaluation and hiring of new staff
  • Query design and stored procedure development using T-SQL
  • Support various disaster recovery and business continuity planning efforts
  • Perform basic DBA activities following established DMS processes and procedures (structure changes, code deployments, data copies, backup/restore processes, maintenance, security, optimization and tuning, capacity planning, job scheduler tasks, database creation and conversion tasks, database upgrades, etc.)
  • Keep current with the latest industry technologies and best practices
  • Participate in the on-call support model; involves weekend and after-hours support on a rotating basis
Technical Skills Required:
  • Academic Training
  • Bachelor degree in Computer Sciences or relevant education and experience
  • Certifications helpful but not mandatory
Work Experience:
  • Minimum 10 years experience in IT, with 3+ years in a Senior Database Administration/ Analyst position.
  • Minimum 5 years relevant work experience in a MS SQL Server DBA role
  • Experience with implementing, configuring, upgrading and administering MS SQL Server 2000/2005/2008 platforms
