About the Job

This is a DBA role responsible for providing operational database services to the organization’s various SQL Server instances.​ Ability to service Oracle instances would be a significant benefit to the position.​The data systems supported are located at on and off site locations.​ These data environments support various client facing and internal business unit applications along with technology and development solutions/​tools.​ Optimized performance and availability of these databases is vital in meeting SLA/​OLA agreements.​

The Database Administrator (DBA) role requires a service oriented individual with a high sense of ownership of the problems and requests assigned.​  They must be attentive managing and resolving issues in alignment within published SLAs by establishing and maintaining communication with stakeholders keeping them updated with status of their requests.​ They will initiate and perform changes on production systems and proactively escalate any issue(s) that cannot be resolved within the established timeframes.​They must have a thorough understanding of database concepts and hands-on experience in the day to day operations, reporting, ETL, db design, DR, conversions and administration of complex database systems.​

Duties & Responsibilities: 
  • implement monitoring, auditing and alert systems to report performance, capacity and availability measures within the various data environments
  • recommend, implement and support various tools/​practices to enhance data environment performance/​availability in support of functional and non functional SLAs
  • facilitate capacity planning though identifying required hardware, software, database configuration/​architecture necessary to support application needs
  • develop processes, procedures and jobs to monitor and/​or automate tasks required for database maintenance
  • design, implement, maintain and automate the appropriate backup and recovery architecture required
  • ensure storage, archiving, back-up and recovery procedures are functioning as required
  • develop, test and maintain current DR and Business Continuity plans
  • secure database servers through roles and permission management
  • maintain database documentation, including data standards, procedures, definitions for the data dictionary (metadata), and applications /​ solutions supported by the enterprise data environments
  • build, test and implement database scheme, tables, and stored procedures where required
  • install and test software installations, configuration changes and patching as required
  • work closely with IT project managers, database programmers and application developers along with external service providers as required
  • communicate regularly with technical, applications and operational staff to ensure database integrity and security,
  • Evaluate new database technologies /​ tools making recommendations for improvements when/​where required
Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or college diploma in relevant field
  • 5+ ​ years experience managing, configuring and maintaining 2000-2008 SQL Server databases in a high availability environment across geographical locations
  • Oracle expertise a significant asset
  • 5+ ​ years experience in the following areas; database performance tuning, backup and recovery, system architecture and design, as well as high availability concepts
  • Proven experience developing procedures, processes and conventions to standardize database operations
  • Experience in large scale conversion, enterprise report, DR and ETL
