Senior Database Administrator
Regular Full Time (1.0 FTE)
Within the context of the Information Management/Information Systems (IMIS) shared services initiative between Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) and Providence Health Care (PHC), the Senior Database Administrator, IMIS, is responsible for ensuring that the assigned databases are maintained at optimum levels to provide a stable platform and proper environment on which the supported applications can operate. These systems may be departmental, inter-departmental, corporate, multi-site or multi-hospital. The major area of support is for clinical, financial or patient care related systems. The work performed has a significant impact on the delivery of and use of computer services and resources to the organization. Technical aspects of the work involve ensuring the efficient operation of the unit including the immediate resolution of highly complex technical problems related to the design, installation and operation of operating and online systems software and computer equipment of various types. This position provides an advisory service to both internal and external users and maintains the performance targets of the major subsystem through regular monitoring and tuning activities. Project management, systems analysis, programming skills and techniques are required in order to manage assigned project work.
Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provides technical support and ongoing systems administration by methods such as maintaining up-to-date knowledge of database software supplied by the manufacturers, monitoring key system performance indicators, planning and providing a stable production environment. Establishes and documents standards and procedures for use and operation of database software and utilities. Analyzes current database software, proposed modifications and new versions/technologies for impact on existing applications and operating environment. Provides technical guidance and training to Information Systems personnel and user departments.
- Acts as database administrator by providing standard systems management services for different database technologies. Provides database support for the databases and associated application components in clinical, financial and other areas of the organization, performing systems analysis, assisting the users to resolve data integrity issues, interacting with systems vendors to provide corrective actions as required and developing application programs and reports.
Education & Experience
Graduation from a recognized degree or diploma program in Computer Science or computer systems technology plus a minimum of 3 years working as a Database Administrator, preferably working with high volume applications.
Experienced in working in a large production system environment that includes over 200 servers.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks Ability to present solutions and make recommendations to team.
Ability to be on call on a rotational basis Able to pick up new Applications easily.
Microsoft SQL 2000/2008 Server - previous experience in: backups/recovery, troubleshooting issues such as blocking/deadlocks, index management tuning SQL statements, monitoring performance using tools such as Profiler to identify and successfully resolve current/potential issues, understanding and ability to analyze/write custom stored procedures, solid understanding of SQL security principles, database archiving techniques)
Microsoft Windows 2000/2003/2008 (experienced in working with these 3 ->versions of Windows, including Share/NTFS security, system logs, web ->services, ftp/smtp, system monitoring, Server backup/recovery, ->wmi/batch scripting ability)
Peoplesoft - Very good understanding of how Peoplesoft operates in a multi-tiered Server environment essential. Demonstrated on hands experience working with Weblogic PIA Server, BEA Tuxedo middleware within HCM, FSCM, and Portal modules. Very beneficial to have associated third party software experience including Softshare EDI, Highjump PAR Inventory, Loki timekeeping, Crystal Reports, and Cognos)
