We are currently hiring for a Database Administrator who will lead all decisions in architecting and implementing enterprise-wide database solutions for the UAlberta web ecosystem, comprised of faculty, administrative, institute, and research partnership websites.

Duties

  • Daily responsibility for the overall optimization and performance tuning of UAlberta web databases
  • Defines and leads best practices in database coding for web team
  • Creates open data protocols for integration of web applications with university data sets and champion open data protocols across the university
  • Develops web applications database access using .NET and C#
  • Maintains and optimizes database design and accessibility
  • Implements enterprise-level database solutions and T-SQL solutions using SQL Server 2005 or later
  • Implements SQL Server replication techniques
  • Identifies and creates solutions for data integrity issues
  • Maintains data dictionary for all datasets
  • Reviews code of teammates to ensure best design and coding practices are adhered to
  • Responsible for source code management of all created code and creates build processes for code to be tested and reviewed by peers
  • Designs and writes database code for use in both web and mobile applications
  • Works in an Agile design and development environment using Scrum best practices
  • Designs and writes code used in the University content management system (Sitecore)
  • Researches, tests, and recommends new database technologies to incorporate into new and existing projects
  • Writes technical documents to summarize activities undertaken to complete a project and/or to help other programmers to analyze and interpret source code
  • Coordinates project quotes, scope documentation, and timelines, providing input to Project Manager when projects are very large in scope or cross into other units at the university
  • Presents information on new techniques and technologies; compares/demonstrates technologies, makes self available to other web developers on campus in an informal mentorship role

Qualifications

  • BSc in Computing Science preferred; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered
  • 5 or more years of experience designing and implementing enterprise level database solutions
  • Advanced to expert knowledge of T-SQL using SQL Server 2005 or later
  • Extensive experience with database optimization and performance tuning
  • Extensive knowledge of SQL Server Replication techniques
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering and best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
  • Experience with working with .NET SQL CLR objects preferred
  • Experience developing web applications using .NET and C# preferred
  • Experience in developing reports using Business Intelligence tools preferred
  • Experience with other .NET technologies, such as WCF, WPF, LINQ to SQL, LINQ to Entity, ADO.NET Entity Framework preferred
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment (Scrum) preferred
  • Experience working with the Sitecore Content Management System preferred
